give someone you love
the gift of cooking with
one of my recipe books!
Welcome to my wholefoods plant-based recipe page :) My name is Jacqui and I am Nutritionist and good food enthusiast!
My friends could all tell you that I am never far from the kitchen and spend most of my free time cooking and baking. I have always loved food – quite often not of the healthy variety!
When I finished high school my Dad sat me down at the kitchen table and asked what I would like to do with my life – study, work, traineeship – anything the choice was mine! I had no idea… One of my good friends pointed out this love of food and my interest in all things food related and suggested Nutrition. It was an ‘ah ha’ moment that took me from the fast food-loving path to a much healthier food and nutrition path.
While at university I met an amazing and inspiring young lady that is now one of my best friends and she is also one of the best cooks I have met in my life! The foods she cooked and prepared were vastly different from anything I had experienced before… wholefood. Prepared from scratch and mostly vegetarian, and I loved it ALL! It was so exciting learning a new way of cooking and discovering new foods and ingredients. This was a huge influence on my food and cooking journey.
I started eating more and more vegetarian foods until I made the conscious decision to go full vegetarian. I did a little research before turning vego and also read a few books on the meat industry and ethical eating. The book that most influenced my decision was Peter Singer’s ‘The Ethics of What We Eat’.
My decision to go vegetarian was a little of everything – health, enjoyment (I always loved vegetables and was not a huge meat lover - although I must admit I did previously indulge in our most common university 'fat run' which involved a drive through KFC order of a '2 piece feed and a colonel burger!), environment and sustainability reasons, as well as helping to reduce world poverty.
The biggest reason for me personally however is the animal cruelty involved in meat production. I am a huge animal lover and could not bear the thought of an animal dying simply for me to enjoy a meal. The more I researched and learned over the years of being vegetarian moved me more and more towards a 100% plant-based (or vegan) diet and lifestyle. After seven (7) years of eating a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet I eliminated all remaining animal products and became a vegan. I have been following a vegan diet and lifestyle for 3 and a half years.
Nutrition is a relatively new area of science and there is always something new to learn which is fascinating and exciting! I love being asked new and creative questions, even when I don't know the answer because it means I get to learn something new also! I think it is important to learn as much as we can in this life as if we are not learning and growing, we are dead!
One of my areas of interest is allergy-friendly cooking and baking - I am currently writing a recipe book where the emphasis will be on a lot of these kinds of recipes - food that is healthy and most importantly tastes amazing! I do not believe there is a point to eating food which does not taste good! If there is anything else you would like to know please feel free to send me a message :)
I hope you enjoy my recipes!
